Description

CREWKERNE

ST4410 NORTH STREET
876-1/5/176 (West side)
Ashlands Church of England School

II

School. Dated 1896.
MATERIALS: coursed limestone rubble with rusticated bands and
some blue lias and red sandstone decoration. Crested slate
roofs with obelisk finials to most gable ends.
PLAN: complex plan of 5 forward-facing gables and cross
gables.
EXTERIOR: Gothic Revival style. Single storey to the front, 2
storeys to the rear where ground slopes down. A gabled block
to the left has a pierced cross in the apex above a rusticated
semi-circular relieving arch with an ogee quatrefoil to the
centre, above 2 tall rusticated pointed-arches each with an
ogee quatrefoil above 2-light stone-mullioned and transomed
windows.
The left return to this block has a similar gable to the
centre with a buttress to the centre of the windows. A similar
gable to the centre front has smooth red and yellow sandstone
arches, and colonnettes to the window jambs. This is flanked
by 2 lower stepped-forward gabled entrances, each with a door
toward the centre and 2 trefoil-headed leaded lights to the
sides; the planked doors are under segmental-pointed arches
with round stops to the hoodmoulds.
A similar gable to the far right has a 4-light stone-mullioned
window with C20 louvred glazing. All 3 forward gables have a
rusticated band at lintel level and a platband above; that to
the left has the date 1896.
INTERIOR not inspected but noted as having arch-braced roofs
and other original features. A late example in this robust
Gothic Revival style, but a visually impressive and vigorous
design.
