ILFRACOMBE
HIGH STREET
(North side)
No.52

GV
II

Shop with accommodation over. Early C19.
MATERIALS: rendered, solid front and back walls; slate hanging
on exposed top of left gable. Tarred slated roof. Low parapet
with coping, probably of stone, on left gable; rendered base
of former chimney at the apex.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with garret. 3-windows-wide. Ground storey
has late C19 shopfront with wide entrance to public passage on
left. Shopfront and passage-entrance are flanked and separated
by panelled wooden pilasters, these being surmounted by large
brackets upon which stand little gabled blocks.
Entablature survives over passage-entrance, but has been
replaced by blindcase over the shop. Latter has a pair of
display windows with moulded shafts, the windows splayed in
the centre where they adjoin the shop door. Passage-entrance
has low, panelled wooden gate with decorated front hinges and
straps. Upper-storey windows have 6-paned sashes, except that
the middle window in each storey is blind. Moulded wooden
eaves cornice. 2 dormers with cambered tops; windows appear to
be wooden ones of late C20.
House door, opening from passage, is 6-panelled, the top 2
panels now glazed; 2-paned fanlight over. The passage floor
retains a number of old flagstones and some patterned yellow
bricks.
Rear windows in upper storeys (visible from passage behind the
building) have 2-paned sashes, except for the middle window of
the third storey, which is blind.
INTERIOR retains dog-leg stair with open string, shaped ends,
square balusters and mahogany wreathed rail. Original doors
and frames.
