Description

HELSTON

SW6627 MENEAGE STREET
631-1/5/174 (East side (off))
27/04/92 No.62A
and attached outbuilding

GV II

House. C18/early C19, extended in mid/late C19. Uncoursed
local rubble; scantle slate roof; C18 stone right end stack
finished in C19 brick; brick left end stack. Earliest phase of
2 units includes main heated room to right of narrow stair
hall (possibly originally a service room) with C19 service
wing added at right-angles to rear; later C19 two-room
extension to left. 2 storeys; 3-window range. Earliest phase
with quoining on left, has timber lintels over early C19
horizontal-sliding sashes (a rare survival) with glazing bars
and C20 door to left with large C20 gabled hood. Extension to
left has timber lintels over horned 2:2-pane sashes and C20
door. INTERIOR not inspected but noted as having C19 plank and
panelled doors, plank and muntin screens flanking stair; C18
open fireplace with wood bressumer and split principal rafters
to probable A-frame roof in C18/early C19 phase. Subsidiary
features: similar roof continues over outhouse of similar
materials to right, with full-height front doorway and rear
outshut. An interesting example of a small "backlands"
tenement dwelling.
