Pound house to south-west of Rill
Farmhouse

GV II

Pound house. 1848 (datestone on shippon, part of separately
listed court of agricultural buildings which has identical
roof construction (qv)). Local grey limestone rubble; slate
roof, hipped at ends with glazed ridge tiles. Plan: sited on a
farm with a notably sloping site. Sited parallel to the dairy
range and, with it, forming the track through the farm from
the house to the fields. Built into the slope of the land with
loft access from the ground at the west end. EXTERIOR: 3 large
openings on the ground floor on the north side with access
from the track. Large doorway in west end. INTERIOR: ground
floor not inspected. Loft has 7 roof trusses of same
construction as those in the dated 1848 stockyard, queen posts
with a vertical post to the apex. Part of a good contemporary
group of farm buildings. The farmstead at Rill is a notable
feature seen from the Totnes Road.
