Description

BUCKFASTLEIGH

SX76NE COLSTON ROAD
1011-1/2/20 (West side)
Dove Barn, to north-west of Rill
Farmhouse

GV II

Bank barn. Still partly in agricultural use. Probably earlier
than 1848, the date of the other ranges of agricultural
buildings round the stockyard at Rill Farm (qv). Local grey
limestone rubble; slate roof, hipped at ends. Plan: forms the
4th (east) side of a courtyard of buildings on a farm notable
for a sharply sloping site where the ground rises to west of
the house. Bank barn, the ground floor (said to be filled in
with rubble) with access from the west, loft level with access
from the yard. EXTERIOR: east elevation has 3 blocked
ground-floor doorways with timber lintels; loft doorway on
east side has a 3-light casement and 2 rows of pigeon holes
with flight ledges. The loft has a large doorway on the west
side from the yard with a segmental brick arch. INTERIOR: not
inspected but may be of interest. Part of an unusually
complete group of farm buildings. The farmstead at Rill is a
notable feature seen from the Totnes Road.
