Circa 1870, by H R Yeoville Thomason, and the former Union Club. Stone. Two storeys
plus basement; 7 bays, the outer 2 advanced and asymmetrical, plus the curve to the
left-hand return on Newhall Street. Ground floor with a single window in a rusticated
wall, a modern shop front, the open porch with tiled soffit and coupled unfluted
Corinthian columns approached, left and right, up modern flights of steps, another
modern shop front and then bold canted bay window with heavy rustication and masks as
keystones to the windows. First floor with 3 windows with heavy pediments on brackets,
a tripartite window over the porch with central segmental pediment, 2 more windows with
pediments and another tripartite window a little broader than the first. All windows
with arched lights, balconies, keystones and richly carved spandrels. Rich foliage
frieze, bracketted eaves cornice and blocking course with urns. The return 4 bays
and simpler in its rhythms.
