With Gates, Gatepiers And
Flanking Walls.

Entrance lodges, gates, gatepiers and flanking walls. 1776-87, by John
Carr, altered in 1842 by J.B. Papworth. 2 gates: 1842. Cast iron with
spearhead railings and dograil. 2 gatepiers: 1776-87. Ashlar with
channelled rustication and cornice. Heightened in 1842 by the addition
of putti supporting urns with fruit. Short linking walls to left and
right with plinth, cornice and pedestrian gateways with architraves
and cast iron gates. 2 lodges, inner blocks:1776-87, heightened in 1842.
Ashlar with plinth and string course. Cornice and parapet to slate roof
with central moulded stack. Octagonal plan. Arched glazing bar sash to
north-east with imposts and architrave. Rectangular carved panels on each
face below cornice with garlands and lion masks. Outer blocks:1776-87, stack
and porch to rear of 1842. Ashlar with plinth. Cornice and parapet to
pyramidal slate roof and stack. Square plan. One glazing bar sash to
north-east with chamfered reveals, one glazing bar sash to rear, and
entrance with 4-panelled door in angle to rear. Flanking walls: C18.
Ashlar and white brick, approximately 2.5 metres high and 50 metres long
stepped forward with quadrant corners. Stone coping and square end piers.
