Description

NY 43 SW GREYSTOKE JOHNBY

12/128 Mid Farmhouse and
barns adjoining

II

Farmhouse and barns. Mid C17 with later barns, one dated and inscribed H.H.
1831 (Henry Howard). Red sandstone rubble with grey sandstone flush quoins and
dressings. Graduated greenslate roof with banded sandstone ashlar ridge chimney
stacks. 2 storeys, 3 bays with right 2-bay barn under common roof, and left
right-angled barn which is partly domestic, forming an overall L-shape. House
has off-centre C20 door in C19 stone surround. Large mullioned-and-transomed
windows, those on ground floor under continuous hoodmould, each individual stone
of the surrounds initialled R.S., followed by a number or date too weathered to
read. Right barn has centre sliding door and flanking casement windows, all
under slit vents. Left barn is of 2 builds, that nearest the house and now
partly domestic, probably early C18; with C19 extension under common roof. The
older part has a single-storey pent extension and right sash and casement
windows in C19 stone surrounds; the gable wall, continuous with the house front,
has a 2-light window under a casement window, both in stone surrounds. Barn
extension has a large projecting segmental cart doorway, the keystone dated and
inscribed. Upper slit vents and a small left belt-driven threshing wheel. Rear
of farmhouse has a C19 extension. Rear of right barn has plank doors and loft
doorway, all in chamfered stone surrounds, under slit vents. Rear of 1831 barn
has plank door in rebated surround under slit vents, and right pent extension.
Interior of farmhouse has beamed ground-floor ceilings. Former kitchen has
large C17 segmental stone-arched fireplace and left cupboard recess. Lean-to
garage and C20 extensions to 1831 barn are not of interest.
