House and attached railings, now 13 flats. 1774, altered C19
and C20. Built for Thomas Saul. Sandstone ashlar in narrow
courses with ashlar dressings, plus coursed rubble sides and
rear. Slate roof. Main house L-plan formed by double-depth
front block with rear wing to the left. Lower wing set back to
left of main house.
2 storeys over a basement, symmetrical and of 5 bays, with
rusticated quoins, deep plinth, moulded cornice and blocking
course. The raised central entrance is approached by a flight
of 5 steps with nosings, protected by cast-iron railings with
urn finials to the standards, and the doorway has a plain
surround under an open pediment on prominent consoles with
guttae. On each side of the entrance cast-iron railings
mounted on an ashlar plinth protect the basement area. The
basement, which has 4 windows, is of ashlar masonry in very
large blocks, finished with a band which is now broken by the
ground-floor windows. The windows of the principal floors have
raised plain surrounds and 12-pane sashes. The roof has
inserted flat-roofed dormers (concealed by the blocking
course), coped gables and gable chimney stacks. Attached at
the left end, and set back, is a 2-bay extension with central
doorway and 12-pane sashed windows.
Rear: basement exposed, making 3 storeys; round-headed stair
window with impost blocks and keystone.
INTERIOR: open-well staircase with open string, scrolled
brackets, 3 turned balusters per tread, and ramped handrail.
