PADSTOW PRIDEAUX PLACE, Padstow
SW 9075-9175
8/131 Shell House, to west of Prideaux
Place
II
Remains of shell house. Circa mid C19. The shell house is overgrown but appears to
have been constructed of brick which was plastered on the inner face. The roof has
partly collapsed.
Rectangular plan with 2 complete walls and part of the third remaining. Probably
open-fronted with low seats arranged around inner side of walls.
The exterior is largely covered with abundant foliage. The interior retains much of
the shell decoration which, rather than covering the walls completely, was arranged
in patterns on a plaster surface. There are a variety of shells which have been used
and arranged in the shapes of flowers and tree. The family motto, 'toujours pret',
is on the rear wall.
