PADSTOW RIVERSIDE, (west side), Padstow SW 9075-9175 8/139 Court House, Raleigh House and No 8 (previously listed as Court House, 24.4.53 No 8 and No 10)

Court house, now 2 private houses and a holiday cottage. Circa late C16 origins extended probably in the late C17 and in C19. Ashlar slate stone range on left and stone rubble range on right. Asbestos slate and rag slate roofs with gable ends. Brick end and axial stacks. Plan: Overall 'L' shaped plan; the earlier range is the front wing on left. The original arrangement is uncertain and the front wing has been truncated by 1 bay; the house originally fronting the water's edge prior to the C19 remodelling of the south side of the harbour. The wing comprises a 2 room and central entrance plan, lying east-west with both principal ground floor rooms heated by end stacks, a C19 stair in a stair projection to the rear (south) of the passage and a service outshut to the rear of the left hand (east) room. Principal room, possibly the court room above the right hand room on the west. In circa C17 the Court House was extended with a range of double depth plan to the front (north) of the west room, thereby forming an overall 'L' shaped plan. This extension had a central entrance with 2 principal rooms to front (east) and service room to rear extended in C19 by a further bay on the right (north). The C17 range, has now been divided into 2 houses with Raleigh House on the south and No 8 on the north. Court House is the earlier range. Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. Regular 3:3:1 front with ashlar slate stone masonry to left hand wing. Front faces east with central C19 door and fluted doorcase flanked by C19 12-pane sash on left and C19 16-pane sash on right. First floor with early C18 12-pane sash with heavy glazing bars to left, 12-pane window with C18 glazing bars in centre and C19 12-pane sash to right. 2 hipped full dormers with C19 2-light casements. Extended by l-bay to right in probably C19 with C20 door on ground floor and C20 window above. The north elevation of the earlier left hand wing has a regular 3 window front with fine circa early C18 shell hood to porch and C19 door. Two C19 12-pane hornless sashes to left and 3 above, the right hand sash horned. Left hand gable end has a balcony with heavy turned balusters reset when the wing was truncated in the C19. C19 bargeboards. Interior: Court House has complete circa mid C18 raised and fielded panelling in right hand room and painted floral trail to pine china cupboard and C17 ovolo moulded lintel to fireplace with stepped and tongue stops. The left hand room has a C17 carved timber frieze of unusual detailing which was heavily scored in the C19 when plastered. The owners have retained a piece of the frieze. Early C19 stair of walnut with turned newels and balustrade with ramped rail. Principal room on first floor has a barrel vaulted ceiling originally decorated with C17 moulded plasterwork, now gone. Datestone 1668 on end wall. The doorcase to this room is ovolo moulded with double stepped and tongue stops. Roof structure not inspected. Raleigh House has C18 and C19 floor joists and mostly C19 joinery.
