Custom House, bonded warehouse and house, now all part of an hotel and public house.
Probably C18 origins, extended in mid C19 and late C19 or early C20. Custom House
stuccoed and rendered stone rubble with slate roof with hipped ends and rendered
brick end stacks. Stone rubble warehouse with hipped slate roof and house of
probably stone rubble, stuccoed and rendered with slate roof with gable ends.
Plan: Custom House originally close to water's edge prior to remodelling of south
side of Padstow harbour (qv). Large deep-plan bonded warehouse added on north side
in circa mid Cl9. In late C19 or early C20 a house was added on the west side of the
warehouse. In the late C20 the 3 buildings were amalgamated to form an hotel.
Exterior: 2 storey regular 3-window east front to Custom House with string course,
incised lines in stucco on ground floor, raised quoins and moulded eaves. Entrance
near centre has panelled door flanked by 2 16-pane hornless sashes and door to right.
Above are 3 early C19 sashes in 2-centred arched openings with intersecting glazing
bars. Warehouse of 3 storeys and attic with 3-window east front and 2-window north
front. Brick segmental arches to openings. 2-light casements on east front and C20
doors and windows on ground floor of north front with 2-light casements and central
loading bay above. House to right has a 2-storey bay on left and entrance to right.
Interior: Interior of warehouse largely gutted when altered to hotel.
