Description

ST ISSEY SEA MILLS
SW 97 SW
4/240 Sea walls to mill pond

GV II

Sea walls and mill pond for tide mill. Probably C18 with earlier origins. Pitched
slate stone rubble walls enclosing roughly circular millpond of four and a half acres
in estuary to tributary of River Camel.
The sluices were originally sited on the north east of the mill pond and the mill,
which has been demolished, stood on a pier beyond (qv slip, quay and retaining walls,
Sea Mills).
First reference to grist mill at Sea Mills 1675. In 1810, 1816 and 1846 a 3-storey
stone building was offered for sale. Ceased operation in 1899 when the Padstow
railway viaduct was erected across the estuary restricting the flow of water to the
mill pond and the access of cargo ships to the mill.
Sites and Monuments Register, Truro.
