SS 7229-7329
18/138 Winston Cottage and Nos. 2 and 3,
- Lock's Cottage
GV II
House, now divided, and adjoining cottage. Early to mid C17 house and probably C18
cottage. House divided probably in the mid to late C19. Rendered cob over high
stone-rubble plinth (some of stonework roughly squared and coursed) and C18 addition
with stone-rubble ground floor and rendered cob first floor. Thatched roof, half-
hipped to right. Red-brick stacks.
Plan and development: C17 2-room baffle-entry plan, facing south (ground falls to
right). Consisting of 2 principal rooms flanking stack, and small unheated room to
right, probably a C18 or C19 addition (possibly even a C20 addition - see C20 joists
internally). Entrance lobby in front of stack, with shallow full-height rectangular
projection to front. Probably early to mid C18 one-room plan cottage added to left,
with integral end stack. Old staircase in right-hand of room to right of stack.
House divided probably in the C19 when second door was inserted. Two storeys.
Exterior: Roughly-symmetrical fenestration; 5 windows to first floor and 4 to ground
floor, probably C19 2-light small-paned wooden casements with wooden lintels. First-
floor windows with 2-light glazed gablets above. Pair of C20 boarded doors to
central break, with C19 pent-roofed porch and approached by stone steps. C20 stable-
type door to left-hand cottage, to right of window.
Interior: Only right-hand cottage inspected internally. Principal room has C17
cambered deep-chamfered cross beam with convex runout stops. C17 oak winder
staircase in right-hand rear corner of this room. Right-hand end room with C20
joists. Bedroom above principal room has old boarded cupboard door with H-L hinges.
Longitudinally-spanning joists and old stone fireplace noted in ground-floor room of
left-hand cottage. Roofspace not inspected. Winston Cottage was formerly known as
No. 1, Lock's Cottage.
