Church of All Saints

A Grade II* Listed Building in Braunston-in-Rutland, Rutland

The Braunston Goddess

Uploader's Comments

The Braunston Goddess found 1920 when church doorstep needed to be replaced. When lifted carving revealed. Clearly not a gargoyle, it has facial and stylistic similarities with some Sheela na Gigs, but crucially no genitalia. The figure has a head with 2 eyes and pronounced eyebrow ridge. The remaining eye has a drilled pupil - probably as did the other. Much damage to left side of head but remnants of other eye remain and a second nose is also present. Below the eyes is a large open mouth with tongue. Deeply carved striations appear on both sides of figure. Underneath are breasts, though the right one is damaged.
