Hotel, formerly large gentry house. C16, with modern rebuilding at the rear
(roof pitch raised) and refenestration. Coursed Lias stone walls. Thatch
roof with gable ends. 2 rendered stacks at left (projecting) and right hand
gables. Large projecting front stack, at centre, with moulded plinth and
set-offs, rebuilt 1982 with gross pointing. Plan: 3 units ground plan,
with parlour and hall at centre. Original entrance, not ascertainable.
2 storeys. 4 windows, 3 light C20 metal casements with glazing bars. Wooden
frames and mullions. 2 small single windows, either side of stack (first
floor), with leaded lights. Front door at right hand end of south front,
C20 wooden studded door. Hipped thatch canopy over. Large outshut at rear,
under gentle pitch taken from ridge. Rendered walls and a tile roof. Small
canted oriel. Interior: hall with heavily moulded ceiling beams comprising
16 compartments. Joists running in opposing directions in each cell, C16.
Stone fireplace, C19 in Tudor style. "RCHM, Dorset I," p 95 (7).
