Description

TEDBURN ST MARY WESTWATER HILL (south side)
SX 89 SW

3/99 Applecoate Cottage

- II

House. Circa late C16 or earlier origins, probably extended and partly remodelled in
the C18. Colourwashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, thatched roof gabled at
left end, hipped at right end; 2 axial stacks, right end stack.
The present plan is single depth and 5 rooms wide. Complex development. The left-
hand 2 rooms, under a lower roof line are of circa late C16 origin and the right-hand
room, heated by an axial stack, has been used as a kitchen. The right-hand 3 rooms
are under a higher roofline, the central room is heated by an axial stack and has
been used as a kitchen. There is no evidence of a passage or opposed doorways, and
the unheated central room of the whole range has a passage parallel to the front wall
and was formerly in use as a dairy.
2 storeys. Irregular 3+2-window front. The left-hand end of the house, under the
lower roofline, has only 1 small 2-light first floor casement with the eaves thatch
eyebrowed over it and a front door to the right under a canopy. Ground floor window
left C20, ground floor window to left of front door 2-light casement, 6 panes per
light. The right-hand end of the house has regular fenestration; first floor 2-light
casements with 2 small panes at the top of each light.
Interior The heated room to the left of the front door has a deeply-chamfered cross
beam with step stops. Open fireplace with stone rubble jambs and a replaced lintel.
No access to roofspace at time of survey (1985) but one of the trusses may be a
jointed cruck and blackened timbers said to have been visible during renovations.
The right-hand end of the house was 1 room withacliimfered probably C18 cross beam
with run-out stops and a co-evalopen fireplace with Posbury stone jambs and a
chamfered lintel with run-out stops.
An intriguing evolved house which may have a medieval roof and retains some interior
features of the circa late C16 and C18. The house is set back but visible from the
road. Shown as Coate on OS map.
