2 buildings, now opened out as single ground floor, and
brought into unified use and ownership as public house and
ancillary residential accommodation. No.22 (right), former
house, early C18, altered C19 and 1980s. No.24 (left) late
C16, altered C19 and 1980s.
No.22 colourwashed stucco over brickwork, hipped old tiled
roof with modillioned eaves cornice. 2 storeys, plinth, first
floor plat band, principal facade faces east, 6 sash windows
facing New Road, 2 to front, all with glazing bars, set in
reveals. Central first floor panel. Ground floor has C20 small
paned windows 1980s.
Entrance now through former No.24 at left, which is
timber-framed, with colourwashed plaster, old tiled roof. 2
storeys with gable end facing High Street. Ground floor
rebuilt late C20, with flush sash window, was formerly
jettied, as revealed during 1980s reconstruction, with some
studwork of side wall exposed internally. This site should not
be confused with the historic Bell Inn, which was at No.77
(qv) on the south side of High Street. Modern single-storey
outbuilding facing East Street not of special interest.
