Description

Former house or pair of houses. Built in the mid-C18, altered to shop premises and extended in the C19; further alterations and extensions in the C20 and C21.

MATERIALS: it is constructed of red brick laid in header bond; front elevation of 92 High Street is painted; with dressings of stone and brick, under tiled roofs with a brick stack.

PLAN: it has a double-depth plan, with rear ranges of various dates.

EXTERIOR: the building is three storeys and basements, with rear ranges of one, two and three storeys. The front elevation is five bays, with stone quoins and a dentilled cornice above the ground floor, and a dentilled block cornice below the eaves that rises to an open pediment over a central window at second-floor level. On the ground floor are a pair of late-C20 shop fronts which extend the full width of the building. The first-floor openings have gauged brick flat arches and triple keystones. The three left-hand bays have multi-paned, horned sashes and those to bays four and five (92 High Street) have no glazing bars. The second floor openings are similar, with flat arches of gauged bricks and triple keystones, and imposts to the semi-circular headed central window within the pediment. To the left of the central window are two three-over-three sashes and to the right are two plate-glass windows that have been enlarged.

INTERIOR: the ground floor has been altered to form two shops.

History

90 and 92 High Street was built in the mid-C18 as perhaps one or two houses (RCHME, see Sources). It housed a draper’s shop and a chemist throughout the 1800s (Poole High Street Project, see Sources).
