House and barn, now 3 cottages. Late C16 and C17, altered; cottage conversion
second half C19; C20 alterations. Ground floor of red brick with blue brick
headers in Sussex bond, 1st floor tile hung, incorporating former timber
framing; plain tile roof. Late C16 3-bay barn; 2 bays added to south end Cl7
and these together with southern bay of barn, occupied as hall house. Second
half C19 rest of barn converted to 2 cottages. 2 storeys with attic.
Diamond-paned metal casement windows. West elevation: 5 1st floor windows. On
right, Shepherd's Cottage has C20 ½-glazed stable door and flanking windows
with 2-light casement to right; central cottage (No 2) has board door to left
of 2-light casement, both with flat brick arches; external stack with gabled
outhouse attached to left; left-hand cottage (No 3) has C20 addition, not of
special interest. Five 2-light casements to 1st floor. C20 dormer to right.
Hipped roof with ridge stack to Shepherd's Cottage and one in rear roof pitch
on left. Rear: glazed C20 door to Shepherd's Cottage, board doors to Nos 2 and
3; four 3-light casements to each floor. Right return: C20 single-storey
addition not of special interest; C20 1st floor window and dormer. Interior:
Shepherd's Cottage has jowelled wall posts; old beams and joists; large
fireplace with timber bressummer; old board doors; collared queen-post roof
trusses, old purlins and rafters and one remaining wind brace. Interiors of
Nos 2 and 3 not inspected. Rape of Hastings Survey, Report No 30.
