Cupola from old Town Hall on west
side of park
II
Cupola from old town hall. Designed 1862-66 by Cuthbert
Brodrick and resited when the Town Hall was demolished in
1912. Ashlar with cast-iron and lead finial. Circular base of
3 steps, carrying a drum with moulded round-arched openings
and a deep cornice with moulded brackets. Above, an ogee dome
with a ring of moulded oval openings near the base and a wavy
incised line above them. At the top, a deeply fluted cap with
an elaborate finial. This building is a fragmentary survival
of one of the 2 major buildings designed by Brodrick in his
native town. His Royal Institution in Albion Street was
destroyed in World War II.
(The Hull Dock Offices 1787-1976: Rumsby, J H: Hull: 3).
