1856-7. Architects : Poulton and Woodman of Reading. Former Congregational
Church. Portland rubble with ashlars dressings. Nave and 2 aisles with west
end onto street and separated by buttresses with setbacks crowned by tall pointed
finials. South aisle projects very slightly at west end and has a steep polygonal .
spire, opened below in paired ogee-arched bell openings, each pair with its
own gablet. Below this are 2 pointed lancets with a little EE tracery, and
below again planked double doors with ornamental iron hinges in chamfered pointed
arch with hoodmould. Nave has large west window, pointed, with hoodmould, 5
lights with vaguely "Kentish" tracery above, and a lower order of pointed tracery
below. North aisle has 1 pointed arch window with hoodmould, 2 lights and Decorated
tracery. Below this planked double doors with elaborate iron hinges, in pointed
arch with 2 orders of chamfers and hoodmould. Gateway to right hand with steep
coped gable crowned by fleur-de-lys finial: steep cusped pointed arch: very
good contemporary iron gates.
