Cottage. Late C16, extended late C17 or early C17 with later additions and
alterations. Roughcast cob and slate-stone; corrugated-iron roof, over thatch
to left, part hipped to front and half-hipped to back of rear range. Basic
L-plan comprising range aligned north-west to south-east possibly formerly
extending further to north-west with late C17/early C18 addition at right-angles
to rear on right. 2 storeys. North-west to south-east range has 20-paned_
glazing bar sash directly below eaves to left with C18 three-light multi-paned
casement (L-hinges) below. C19 casement to right of 4-panel door (top panes
glazed) under open hip-roofed porch to right of centre also has L-hinges.
External end stack to left. Right return (mainly rear range) has small window
directly below eaves to left. Right part has shallow lean-to with horned 16-paned
glazing bar sash directly below eaves and Cl9 casement with L-hinges beneath.
Half-glazed door under lean-to hood in angled break with main wall. Stepped
external end stack with red brick top has dairy abutting. North side of rear
rnage has 16-panel glazing bar sash directly below eaves and fixed-light window
on ground floor.
Interior: left ground-floor room of north-west to south-east range has chamfered
joists. Rear range has short section of moulded plank and muntin screen in situ
immediately to right of entrance. Formerly continued on same line with right-
angled turn to north-west to south-east range, forming passage. Plank door
with strap hinges at end of former passage leads to staircase. Ledged door
leads to dairy. Left part of north-west to south-east range has collar truss
roof in 2 bays, left truss a few feet from end wall, suggesting that range
may formerly have continued to north-west. Purlins and straw thatch cover
remain below raising of eaves. South-eastern part of range looks contemporary
with rear range, which also has collar truss roof. Some renewal of timbers
and raising of eaves c1940 when corrugated-iron replaced thatch.
