5/33 Gazebo with grotto to north-east
of The Priory

Gazebo with grotto beneath. Mid-late C18. Red brick with
limestone ashlar dressings; ashlar chimney; Welsh slate roof;
tufa limestone to grotto entrance. Square; grotto below with
entrance tunnel. Central doorway with pediment on console brackets
and with bolection moulded architrave; part glazed door with
pattern of octagonal and lozenge panes. Chamfered quoins; coved
eaves with carving enrichment. Single sash to each side with
bolection moulded architrave and pattern of octagonal and lozenge
panes. Ogee hipped roof with central chimney. Interior of gazebo
has corner fireplace with bolection moulded and eared architrave;
floral enriched frieze over. Pointed-arched niches flanking
doorway. Round-headed archway to grotto on next terrace level
below gazebo, all in tufa with tunnel leading back to room below
gazebo. C20 inserted walls and iron door.
