5/47 Post Office
GV II
Post office 1936-39. Red English bond brick; ashlar limestone
dressings; green slate roof. Neo-Georgian. Two-storey with
attic. Three-storey wing to rear is not of special interest.
Front: 7-window with central doorway having stone entablature on
Tuscan pilasters; double small-paned glazed doors. Small-paned
metal casements to ground floor and to central upper floor window,
each with rusticated brick flat arches and jambs; central upper
floor window with keystone. Other upper floor sashes are 16-pane;
5 attic flat-roofed dormers with 12-pane sashes. Moulded eaves
cornice. Flanking walls extend front elevation and have stone
copings sweeping down from corners of building. Original lettering
in contemporary style attached to facade brickwork. Two upper
floor 16-pane sashes at north-west end; single upper floor 16-pane
sash at south-east end. A pleasing and little altered example of a
1930's Neo-Georgian public building having crucial townscape value
on a corner site.
