House. C16 or earlier, with later additions at ends (RCHM
Typescript). Long low timberframed and plastered, facing W.
High thatched roof hipped at each end. One and a half storeys
with 4 casement dormers along front wall plate. Older S half has
heavy close studding to the framed cross wall at the upper (N)
end of the former open hall, low side walls in S bay and steep
smoke blackened clasped purlin roof, head mortice for a 2-light
diamond mullioned S window below end wall plate notched for a
hipped roof. Side walls of hall rebuilt higher with clasped
purlin roof and large central chimneystack inserted at lower end
of hall, in late C16/early C17. N half rebuilt, upper floor and
dormers inserted throughout, and hipped end extensions added in
C17 or early C18. Subsequently divided with new central
chimneys: now one house. Marked on Clintons Estate map of 1588.
Important example of timberframing at the threshold of permanent
house construction.
