Corner terrace house. 1896-97 by Balfour and Turner and virtually a
pair to their No. 6 Aldford Street q.v. Red brick with Portland stone
dressings, slate roof. Free Style Queen Anne and slightly Jacobethan
details. 5 storeys and basement. 2 unequal window bays. Recessed
porch to left with elliptical arch on broad squat stone piers, the
right hand pier overlapping the 2 window ground floor bay with central
dividing pilaster; the canted oriel of 4 architraved narrow sash
lights is corbelled out and its cornice is capped by iron railing as
balcony to 2nd floor tripartite stone dressed window with similar
windows in line above. Narrower coupled and single stone dressed
sashes to entrance bay on 2nd to 4th floors. The front is finished
off with stone coped parapet raised as gable over major right hand
bay. Return has 2 large corbelled chimney stacks linked by wide
segmental arches with balconies to ground and 1st floors, irregular
fenestration with small oriel butting stack nearest corner on 1st
floor. Cast iron Arts and Crafts area railings returned with screen
wall to garden linking up with those of No. 67 Aldford Street. Part
of island block development by Balfour and Turner as part of their
Grosvenor Estate improvements.
