Description

TL 85 NW WHEPSTEAD CHURCH ROAD

4/131 Barn, 50 metres east of
St. Petronella's Church

II

Barn, early C17, with main components reused from a C13 barn. 6 bays, 2
aisles. Doorways at bays 2 and 5. Asbestos and corrugated iron sheeted roof.
Weather-boarded timber-framed walls on plinth of flint and limestone rubble
with red brick quoins. Curved arcade - and tie beam - braces, and aisle braces
from aisle tie-beam up to principal post head. All principal posts and most
tie beams, sections of eaves - and arcade-plates, and several aisle tie-beams
have been rejointed and reused in the present C17 structure, but were
originally the main components of a C13 barn. Each truss of the first barn was
braced solely by 2 pairs of passing braces one below the other, housed at the
upper end into the tie-beam with a secret notched-lap joint, and at the lower
end into a post in the external wall. The existing plinth has re-used carved
limestone fragments of C13-C16. The aisle walls raised and roof rebuilt
c.1800, reusing old rafters.
