Former barn, now cowshed with hayloft. Possibly early C16 in origin,
largely rebuilt in mid-C19. Rough faced, squared and coursed large
stone blocks; clay tile roof. N.E. Elevation: 2 storeys; 9 roof
bays; 8 visible bottom opening windows to ground floor (left hand end
is obscured by C20 concrete block shed), alternate ones are set in blocked
doorways; 7 boarded loft openings; 2 ridge louvres to right. West
gable end has a sliding board door and loft opening above. Interior:
The 3 eastern roof trusses are of C19 queen post construction, the
other 5 roof trusses are possibly C16, and have 2 struts between the beam
and collar, double purlins, curved wind braces and a ridge piece which
sits in a notch formed by the crossing of principals at the apex; there
is evidence to suggest that the barn was originally timber framed, this
includes surviving lengths of wall plate, one surviving wall post with
curved brace extending to the tie beam, empty mortises and peg holes.
The size of the building suggests that it may have been attached to
Croxden Abbey (q.v.) as a tithe barn.
