Description

BADLEY STOWMARKET ROAD
TM 05 NE

1/9 Barn, 20m south-east of
Doveshill Farmhouse
9.12.55
II

Barn, built c.1600 as a stable range or granary of 8 bays; extended to left by
2 bays in C18 or early C19 at which time the original building was converted
to a barn. Timber-framed and weatherboarded with a little C18 plasterwork.
Corrugated iron roof, thatched until mid C20. A central midstrey added to the
north, and a doorway in the east gable in C20. Good quality close-studding
with tension stud-bracing. Tie-beams formerly arch-braced, the braces mainly
renewed with knees in C18/C19. Good side-purlin roof, the lower tier of
purlins butted, and the upper tier wind-braced and clasped with reduced
principals. All 8 bays of the original building were built with an upper
floor which was removed in C18/C19, but the centre bay has anomalous early
alterations including doorways (later blocked) in each side wall. The 2 later
bays retain an upper floor in poor condition.
