House, former public house known as the Sportsman, late C17 with early C18 and
mid C19 additions. Hammer dressed stone, stone slate roof. Forms U-shaped
block: late C17 2-cell house (The Homestead Cottage) to south, of 2 storeys and
attic, has 2 bays of 5-light double chamfered mullioned windows with same over
to 1st floor but only single chamfered. Doorway with composite jambs set
between (blocked), quoins. Extended to north, right hand return wall has former
gable-entry doorway with quoined lintel and cyma moulded surround. Over, to 1st
floor, 12-light flat faced mullioned and transomed window. 4-light window to
attic. Left hand return wall has modern entrance. Gable stacks. Set back is
single-cell early C19 cottage (The Homestead) which has doorway with tie-stone
jambs with 2-light window over; 7-light window with 2 of 3 lights over to 1st
floor. All are chamfered mullioned. This face has been rebuilt reusing the
original windows. Stack at juction of 2 ½ storey mill building which has former
doorway with heavy lintel and tie-stone jambs (blocked). Quoins. Some windows
have wooden lintels. Rear gable has doorway with chamfered lintel and large
square windows over to 1st floor and attic. Single storey outshut to rear of
central cottage.
