Former inn range, now commercial premises. C15, with C17, C18
and C19 alterations. Stucco on timber framework, old tiled
roof with 2 gables facing street.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. 3 first floor flush set sash windows with
glazing bars, 2 in left, one in right gable. Mid C20 shopfront
on ground floor, with large timber-framed plate glass display
window, recessed entrance at right, and weatherboarded
flanking panels, and deep fascia. Carriageway at right with
exposed beams above. Rear outshoot 2 storeys, C16 and C17,
timber-framed, plastered, with old tiled roofs. Sash and
casement windows, modern glazed entrance door and sidelight on
ground floor, modern 3-light small paned casement in gable,
C19 altered single storey south wing.
INTERIOR: opened out on ground floor, with exposed studwork
indicating two 2-bay structures side by side. First floor has
exposed braced tie-beam truss over carriageway, and 2 bay
crown post roof above wing. Left hand range also has crown
post roof above ceiling. Chimney at rear in narrow smoke bay,
with C18 moulded fireplace surround on first floor. Rear
outshoot also has 2 bay crown post roof, and wooden mullioned,
unglazed window, now plastered over internally, on first floor
below eaves alongside central tie-beam truss, indicating
existence of upper open hall in rear range.
Site of The Bell Inn, first recorded in 1479, later
incorporated with the adjoining Star Inn, No 79 (qv).
