WARE TOWN

TL3514SE NEW ROAD
829-1/9/154 (East side)
Boundary wall and gate of Christ
Church and former Vicarage garden

GV II

Embattled and buttressed wall, with offset caps and splayed
copings. 1858. Kentish ragstone. Runs along east of New Road
at back of footpath, approx 85m length, along Christ Church
frontage, continuing northwards along frontage of garden of
Old Vicarage (demolished 1963 when land redeveloped for
Hanbury Close). Sections of cast-iron railing originally
filled embrasures, but were removed for salvage in World War
II. Likewise, the Gothic arched lamp holder, and lantern, over
the footgate were removed, but the cast-iron gate remains.
