Two adjoining 3 storey, 3 window stucco houses in attractive walled garden. Built
and occupied by James Golsworthy, lessee of Exeter Waterworks 1808-33. Modillion
cornices, sash windows with wood architraves. Fascia with serrated edge to porches
and verandahs, carried along at 1st floor level. Iron balustrade to ground floor.
Church House has one ground floor bow. Interior has good top-lighted staircase
in circular well. Tablet on garden wall records the Waterworks having been "contrived"
in 1694 and improved by James Golsworthy in 1811. This was probably by the introduction
of iron pipes, the first in England.
