5/395 Lychgate to churchyard of
the Old Church of St Peter

GV II

Lychgate. Built in memory of Sir Samuel Morton Peto (d. 1889). Timber-framed
on brick footings with stone slate roof. Tudor Gothic style. Box-framed
structure with full width Tudor arches front and back, both with moulded
surrounds and urn stops. Headbeams are inscribed, front one with a Biblical
quotation, the back one to the memory of Sir Samuel Morton Peto. Side walls
have 4-light windows with hollow-chamfered mullions over plank-and-muntin
panelling. Gables above have moulded bargeboards and gable-end trusses have
curving struts. Inside the wall plates are moulded and brattished original
double gates with wavy braces and coffin rest on a series of turned balusters.
