Public house. c1815 altered mid C19 and early C20. Red brick in Flemish bond.
Welsh slate roof. 3 storeys with cellars; corner site has 4 bays to Corporation
Street and l-bay left return forming No 23, Millgate. Bay 3 has 6-panel door
and fanlight with curved glazing bars in square-headed opening with reeded wooden
architrave; other bays have early C20 casements with etched glass under arch-braced
transoms in original openings with projecting sills and cambered brick arches.
1st floor: Mid-late C19 4-pane sashes in original openings; bay-3 window narrower
and blind. 2nd floor: shorter 4-pane sashes to each bay. Wooden eaves cornice.
Roof hipped at left end with altered stack in front of ridge; end stacks to
each slope of right gable. Rear: tall stair-window with 24-pane sash under
cambered arch. Left return: doorway on left of window, all as front. Interior:
ground floor and 1st floor have several early C19 6-panel doors in architraves
with corner bosses. Early-mid C19 bar servery with curved end, panelled dado
and pilasters between 4- and 8-pane sashes; entablature. Early C19 staircase
rises to 2nd floor with turned newels stick balusters and swept handrail. Ground-
floor rooms are numbered and front-right (No 6) has blue and red quarry-tile
floor and early mid C19 fixed benches. Fielded-panel cupboards in kitchen to
rear have H-hinges. Front-left room (No 2) has later bench seating. Owned
by the Raffald family from c1815; the 1st landlord George Raffald, being the
nephew of Elizabeth Raffald, author of "The Experienced Housekeeper" and compiler
of Manchester's first trade directory. Owned by Robinsons Brewery since 1889.
