Maltings. Early C19, north maltings dated 1817, for Edward Norman.
Red brick in Flemish and English bond, east end of south range faced in gault brick. Slate hipped roofs, north range reclad in asbestos tiles, north range has gabled east end clad in corrugated iron.
U-shaped on plan; 2 ranges of malting floors with kilns at the east end linking the two ranges and with cartway under the kilns.
2 storeys meeting ranges with small segmental brick arched window openings with brilles and ground and first floor doorways with plank doors. The east gable of north range has round-headed windows and round stone tablet inscribed:- "Built by Edward Norman 1817". The east end of south range has rectangular stone tablet inscribed:- "These eight maltings were built by Edward Norman from the year 1806 to 1828." At west end 3 square kilns, the south kiln lower, each with steeply-pitched pyramidal slate roof with square louvred cupola on top.
Interior: The first floors are supported on closely-spaced lateral wooden beams on wooden posts with metal pads. Tie-beam and queen-strut roofs, the tie-beams supported on wooden posts. Iron doors to kiln stoke-holes. The kiln roofs are' now lined in asbestos sheets.
Note.: Kelly's Directory (1906) mentions - "very extensive malting establishments in the town and adjoining parish of Mistley". "
