Description

SS 90 SW THORVERTON DINNEFORD STREET (west side),
Thorverton
8/140 The Meads
-
GV II
House. C18 with C20 alterations and addition. Whitewashed and rendered, probably
stone to first floor level, thinner walls include brick at first floor level ;
thatched roof with plain ridge hipped at ends to main block, slate roofed C20
addition under lower roofline at right end, slate hung at right end; single-storey
block has a left end stack and rear lateral stack, right end stack to right end
addition.
Plan The thatched block is a single-depth 2 room plan house with a central entrance
facing a straight stair. Presumably one room was the kitchen but it is not clear
which. In the C20 a single-storey outbuilding to the right of the house was
converted to accommodation and linked to the house by a 1 room plan 2-storey linking
block.
Exterior 2 storeys. Approximately symmetrical 3 window front to the thatched block
and 2 windows to the slate-roofed addition, canted bay to the single-storey block at
the right end. The thatched block has a central entrance with a thatched porch;
first floor windows left and centre probably C18 or early C19 sliding sashes, first
floor and ground floor right hand windows 2-light casements with small panes, ground
floor window left with replacement C20 glazing. Lean-to porch in angle between
thatched and slate-roofed block, the latter is slightly set back and has 2-light
small pane casements.
Interior Largely modernized, some C18 joinery. Roofspace not inspected.
