Description

SS 90 SW THORVERTON SILVER STREET, Thorverton
8/155 Pynes, No 9, including stone garden
- walls and gate piers in front of
house
GV II
House. Probably a late C18/early C19 remodelling of an earlier house. Roughly
dressed local volcanic stone ; rear wing colourwashed and rendered ; slate roof, with
lead rolls to the hips and ridge, hipped at ends to main range which has end stacks
with brick shafts and a rear lateral stack ; rear lateral stack to rear wing.
Plan Unclear at time of survey as interior not inspected but the asymmetry of the
front elevation and the entrance into a passage suggests a pre C18 arrangement.
Principal rooms in the main range ; service wing adjoining at rear right and
projecting beyond main range to the right under a parallel roofline.
Exterior 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 bay front with regular fenestration and a moulded
eaves cornice; panelled front door to right of centre with rectangular fanlight with
glazing bars, pilasters and an entablature. 12-pane front door, other windows
tripartite sashes, 12 pane in the centre and 4 pane to the outer lights ; all windows
with wide timber lintels. The right return of the main range has 2 C20 glazed doors
and double hung sashes. The front elevation of the wing has 1 ground and 1 first
floor tripartite sash, similar to these of the front elevation of the main range and
a probably C20 ground floor 12-pane sash.
Interior Not inspected but features of interest may survive.
The house is slightly set back from the road with a low local volcanic stone garden
wail with square section gate piers with chamfered caps both to the path leading to
the front door and a carriage entrance to the right of the house. The former gateway
retains its iron overthrow.
A gentleman's house in Silver Street, forming a good group with Thorverton, Apple
Garth and West Barton (q.v.).
