GV II
2 houses, probably originally 1 building. C17. Whitewashed and rendered ; thatched
roof with plain ridge, gabled at ends, rear right wing half-hipped at end; end stacks
with brick shafts, similar axial stack.
Plan Approximately U plan. 3 rooms wide main range, single depth at the right end
(West Barton); the left end (Apple Garth) extended by a narrow service room to the
right, rear right and left crosswings. The two right hand rooms of the main range
(West Barton) project slightly to the front suggesting 2 building phases. Apple
Garth, to the left, has an entrance on the front to the right, facing a straight
stair. West Barton consists of 2 heated rooms at the front, direct entrance into
left hand room, and an unheated rear right 1 room plan wing.
Exterior 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2:2 window front, Apple Garth to the left, slightly
set back. C20 entrances : Apple Garth has a C20 front door to the right with a flat
porch hood ; 2 first floor probably C18 3-light casements with square leaded panes ;
2 ground floor 4-light casements with square leaded panes, also probably C18, C20
window to right of front door. West Barton has a C20 front door to left of centre
with a hipped porch canopy carried on moulded timber brackets ; 2 first floor 3-light
casements with square leaded panes ; outer ground floor windows 3-light casements
with square leaded panes ; 2-light window with square leaded panes to right of front
door.
The right return of West Barton, heavily-buttressed has a variety of casements with
square leaded panes including 1 C17 first floor ovolo-moulded timber mullioned window
and a similar 3-light window below it.
Interior The principal room at the front of Apple Garth has a C20 grate, probably
concealing earlier features and 2 cross beams. The right hand beam may be a
replacement and is carried on a moulded post, the left hand beam is chamfered, stops
may be buried in the wall plaster. The principal first floor room has the remains of
a moulded plaster cornice. The left hand ground floor room of West Barton has an
open fireplace with ashlar jambs and a chamfered oak lintel with scroll nick stops ;
chamfered cross beam with scroll-stops. A section of circa early C17 panelling above
the fireplace is divided into 3 panels with foliage carving and is not necessarily in
situ. Ground floor room right has a partly blocked C17 fireplace with stone jambs
and a chamfered lintel. A section of carving, dated 1612 with the initials WY over
the fireplace is scroll-stopped and may be re-sited; chamfered cross beam with
scroll-stops.
Roof Not inspected at time of survey (1986) but said to consist of pegged x apex
trusses probably of a late C17/early C18 date.
An attractive thatched range on the roadside in Silver Street with an unusual
survival of early windows and interior features of interest. Group value with Pynes
and Thorverton (q.v.).
