Description

ILSINGTON SOUTH KNIGHTON
SX 87 SW
8/132 Bank barn about 10 metres
- east of South Knighton House

GV II

Bank barn, the north end converted into a cottage in early or mid C19. Probably
built in C18. Stone rubble with hipped roof covered with corrugated iron.
Projecting chimneystack in north gable end. 2 storeys. Several old plank doors
survive on exterior. Internally the south ground-storey room has been used for
cider making. The fittings for an apple-crusher hang from tne upper floor beams,
and at the south end is a cider press. The screw and cog-wheels are of iron, the
rest of wood; the pressing trough has been removed, but the small granite trough for
collecting the juice remains. Above is the barn with double doors on the east side.
The cottage end has gable-fireplaces in both storeys, each having a segmental brick
arch. The ground storey fireplace has a wooden chimneypiece of some architectural
pretensions with round moulded panels in the top corners. The simple staircase
against the south wall blocks a former doorway into the cider room. At ground-
storey level this wall is of stone and at second-storey level of timber studs
covered with lath and plaster. The roof has old trusses with collars pegged to the
faces of the principal rafters.
