House, formerly a farmhouse. Probably C18, altered early or mid C19. Solid
rendered walls, probably of stone. Slated roofs with clay ridge-tiles; left wing
and verandah tiled. Parapet on each gable of main block with red brick
chimneystack on top; rendered stack projecting from side-wall of left wing.
Double-depth plan with 2 main rooms at the front flanking the principal stair
compartment; back stair behind principal stair has 2 rooms to left and 1 (the
kitchen) to right; further small rooms in wings at either end. Main block 2-
storeyed with garrets; wings single-storeyed. 3-window main front to south-east,
with 1 window in each wing. All the windows have 6-paned sashes with margin-panes,
many of the panes with old glass. In centre of ground storey a round-arched
doorway with panelled reveals; 6-panelled door with fanlight over, this having
intersecting glazing-bars forming Gothic arches. Main block has raised cement
quoins and deep eaves-cornice. In front of ground storey is an open verandah,
probably late C19, on chamfered wood posts. Wings have tall parapets disguising
lean-to roofs. Gable-walls of main block have 10-paned sash window in second
storey and window with pointed arch lighting garret; the garret windows have
glazing forming Gothic arches, a C20 replica of the original. Rear elevation to
north-west has a segmental-headed window at each end of the ground and second
storeys; those contain C18 wood casements of 4 mullioned-and-transomed in ground
storey and 3 mullioned lights in second storey. The mullions have shallow
mouldings and the lights contain C20 patterned leaded glazing. Centre bay has a
projecting porch with room over, probably a C19 addition. To right of it in ground
storey is a verandah on moulded wood columns. Behind the house is a courtyard
enclosed on the north-west and south-west sides by a high stone rubble wall;
against the south-west wall is a lean-to former stable block, remodelled in C20.
The north-west wall contains a carriage-gate with segmental arch set in a slight
projection; arch and jambs of dressed Devonian limestone. To the north-east of it
is a small gateway with curved granite lintel. To the south-west of it, outside
the walled courtyard, is a separate entrance to the south-east front; this has
square ashlar gate piers with pyramidical tops, these being set back and linked to
the road by quadrant walls.
Interior: principal stair compartment has modillioned plaster cornices in both
storeys and a floral plaster boss in the centre of the ceiling. Second-storey
landing has moulded round-arched doorway with panelled reveals. Wooden geometric
stair with handrail scrolled at the foot and ramped up over a newel at the top.
Curiously archaic turned balusters of early or mid C18 type with square necking-
pieces; shaped step-ends. Passage to back door paved with large stone slabs.
South-west front room in ground storey has moulded cornice and enriched margin-band
to ceiling. Wooden chimneypiece with fluted pilasters and festooned frieze.
Upper-storey rooms not inspected; they are said not to contain features of great
interest. The house does not appear on the 2-inch Ordnance Survey map of 1803-4,
but the staircase and some of the rear windows have features usually associated
with the early or mid C18.
