Description

ST4717 STOKE SUB HAMDON CP HAM HILL ROAD (East side)
6/304 Nos 57, 59 and 61
-
GV II
Row of 3 cottages. Later C18, certainly pre 1826. Ham stone cut and squared, ashlar dressings; coursed rubble to sides
and rear; Welsh slate roof between stepped coped gables, at steep pitch; brick chimney stacks. Two storeys, one bay
each house. Plain mullioned windows with beaded surrounds, 3-light with projecting stone cills, all with simple
casements inserted; between bays 2/3 doors to Nos. 59 and 61, both part-glazed under shared moulded flat stone hood on
stone brackets; similar single door to left of bay 1 for No. 57. Interiors not seen. No. 55 (q.v) which is a later
build-on, is dated 1826; these are part of a group of small houses close to the Ham stone quarries, and almost
certainly stonemason's houses.
