Mid-late C19 alterations and extensions by George Devey to an earlier C19 house.
Very long building. Main south front of 3 storeys. Projecting 3-bay centre
flanked by 3-bay side sections. At south end 2 further set back bays and returned
wing with higher back parts including octagonal battlemented tower, and 2-storey
battlemented front. Whole house in Tudor style with many gables. Red brick
with large diaper of blue headers, and stone dressings. Windows with stone
mullions and transoms. Tall slated roofs have high, grouped Tudor chimneys.
Northern part, added by Macartney in 1890, is stuccoed. Just south of this
is entrance under large Tudor arch with hoodmould. Long neo-classical extension
at far north end.
Entrance front a shallow U-shape. Battlemented right part has 2 square towers
with octagonal turrets. Left parts gabled, as on other front. Parapets to
projecting side wings. Entrances under 4-centred arches with varied enrichment.
