TQ 54 SW BIDBOROUGH PENSHURST ROAD (south side)

3/24 Lodge to Swaylands School

GV II

Lodge to Swaylands School, contemporary with the stable block. The main
school is separately listed in Penshurst parish. Circa 1880s. Local
sandstone ashlar; concrete tile roof; stack with brick shafts. Tudor style.

Plan: Sited at the entrance to Swaylands School, facing west where the
principal room overlooks the drive, service wing at right angles to the rear.
Porch block to the north west, front door in the west wall.

Exterior: Single-storye and attic. Asymmetrical 1:3-bay west front, the
single-storey porch block, slightly set back to the left, has an embattled
parapet and a Tudor arched chamfered doorway with a C19 plank and cover strip
door. The left return of the porch has 3 round-headed one-light windows. The
main block, to the right, has a ground floor bay with an embattled parapet,
the windows with C20 glazing replacing the original small-pane casements.
Above this, 2 gabled dormers with kneelers and copings, preserving their
original small-pane casements. The left (north) return of the main block,
facing the Penshurst Road, has a coped gable to the right with an original 2-
light window and a gabled dormer to the left, also with an original window,
matching those in the west elevation.

Interior: Not inspected.

Group value with Swaylands School.
