House and attached row of 7 cottages. c1850s. Ruskin Cottage
of limestone ashlar, others of coursed and dressed limestone;
slate and concrete tile roofs, each dwelling with moulded
cornicing to end stacks. Ruskin Cottage of double-depth plan;
cottages each with parlour to front and rear service wing.
Ruskin Cottage of 3 storeys with basement; 2-window
first-floor south-west front has horned 6/6-pane and 8/8-pane
sashes, with decorative cast-iron first-floor balcony. Nos 1-7
of 2 storeys and each of 2-window first-floor range: plain
raised architraves to 6/6-pane first-floor sashes and 3/6-pane
ground-floor sashes, with some later C19 and C20 replacements
(to Nos 4,5 and 6), and to panelled doors (C20 replacements to
Nos 4-6) with overlights. Interiors not inspected. A
well-preserved row of workers' housing, built in an area
developed for housing and industry after the arrival of the
railway in 1840-1 and similar in style to cottages erected for
workers at the Rowland. Brotherhood's engineering works - Nos
52-67 Marshfield Road (qv).
