House. Early C18, altered early C20. Coursed limestone rubble
with freestone dressings, stone slate gambrel roof with 3
hipped dormers, moulded stacks to gable ends and rear. 2-unit
through-passage plan with a single-storey service wing to the
right.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic; originally symmetrical
3-window range, early C20 bay added to the left. C19 and C20
rear extensions. Cyma moulding to windows, heavily restored in
C20 with C20 glazing, 3-light with stone mullions to the
right, single light above the planked door and hood on
brackets. To the left a large C20 2-storey bay, canted to the
right, with a cornice and parapet, has similar 3-light
stone-mullioned windows to the front and right slope.
INTERIOR: a stone-flagged passage has C20 stairs to the right
and a C19 door with margin panes to the rear extension. The
room to the right has a chamfered beam and a chamfered Tudor
arch to an open fire to the gable end. The room to the left,
with the bay, is c1920.
On the 1st floor is an early C18 thin 2-panelled door with a
C19 lock and a C19 4-panelled door. The attic has early C18
planked doors with chamfered rails and wrought-iron strap
hinges, and a plain fireplace to the right. The 3-bay tie-beam
roof has slightly chamfered trenched purlins, a ridge-in-notch
and sawn rafters. To the ground floor is some repositioned oak
panelling, said to be from Battle Abbey.
HISTORY: once part of the Monkton estate, this was formerly
the centre of a terrace of 3, now demolished. Their garden
paths remain.
