Bank. 1904-6. By AS Hewitt. Brick with a stone facade. Slate
roof. Edwardian Baroque style. The banking hall is of one tall
storey with a 2-storey facade added for effect, at the first
floor only one room deep. One wide window range. The facade
has a narrow entrance bay set to the right of a window bay,
both defined by rusticated quoins. The window is a Venetian
window on granite Ionic columns, with a rusticated arch and
garlanded cartouches right and left. The door bay has a
polished granite entrance with a fanlight set between a pair
of rusticated Doric columns rising to a swan-necked pediment.
Over this is a circular window set inside a garlanded
cartouche. At the second floor is a balustrade. Wide and
narrow bays continue, separated by paired Ionic columns rising
to block entablatures. 3 rusticated windows to left bay and
one to right bay. Over left bay is a set-back segmental
pediment with heavy dentilations. Crenellated pediment. The
banking hall returns have 2 round-headed sashes.
INTERIOR: banking hall with marble Ionic pilasters supporting
a decorative coffered ceiling with plaster devices.
