Barn with integral shippons. Probably late C17 or very early C18; raised and altered in later C19. Coursed squared sandstone rubble with large quoins, slate roof. PLAN: T-plan formed by main range on approximately east-west axis with a very unusual multi-function porch-wing in the centre of the north side, a shallow porch opposed to this at the rear (and C19 lean-to cart-sheds, which are not of special interest, added to the front on either side of the central wing). EXTERIOR: the wide 3-storey 3-window porch-wing has a chamfered plinth, a depressed-arched wagon entrance flanked by small chamfered one-light windows at ground floor and 1st-floor levels (all unglazed and most with vertical cast-iron bars), coupled 2-light double-chamfered mullioned windows in the centre of the 2nd floor (the left lacking the mullion) also unglazed and with horizontal iron bars, and a small one-light window above these; ridged gable coping with kneelers; a large cruciform cast-iron finial (like a weather vane); and, within the entry, a chamfered square-headed doorway in each side, and harr-hung double doors with cast-iron harr-pins and sockets. Its return sides have 2-light mullioned windows to the upper level. The main range has a chamfered plinth and some blocked slit-breathers at ground floor level (both sides now covered by added cart sheds). Each gable wall has 3 shippon doorways at ground floor, the central doorway enlarged (and that at the west end flanked by C19 windows) and the outer ones with chamfered surrounds but now blocked, a chamfered loading doorway in the centre of the upper floor (that at the east end blocked), a vertical owl-hole near the apex, and gable coping like that of the porch. INTERIOR: C19 bolted queen-post roof trusses; lofts to both sides. Forms group with Towneley Farmhouse approximately 50 metres

east (qv).
