Remains of castle. c.1341. Altered C19 and C20. Rebuilt and
with additions, late C19. Coursed and squared rubble and brick,
with slate and corrugated asbestos sheet roofs, some steep
pitched. Single gable stack. Single storey with lofts. U-plan
around yard. Site bounded by dry moat. Barn on east side has
adjoining C20 lean-to cowshed. To its right, projection with
catslide roof. Beyond, brick steps to door, and beyond again,
double door and a rubble buttress. Above, square blocked
opening. West side has 2 C20 garage doors and to their right,
casement flanked by single blocked doors, and beyond, a larger
casement. Above, a central casement. South gable has C20
sliding door. Stable range, C19, to north, has blank rubble
wall. To south, off-centre garage door and 2 stable doors and 4
casements. Stables and cowsheds to west, 12 bays, have on west
side, to left, gable with splayed corner containing chamfered
doorway with segmental head. To its right, mullioned casement.
Above it, ashlar asterisk. Beyond, to right, C19 stable, 2 bays,
with 2 casements to north and 3 doors to south. To its right,
rubble boundary wall with gabled ashlar coping. Beyond, 3
casements. East side has to left, 4 bay cartshed and to right,
passageway flanked by stable doors and casements. This group of
buildings incorporates the remains of Greasley Castle. This is a
Scheduled Ancient Monument No. 34.
